I have an extremely high deductible health insurance plan.
It is one of those plans that would be considered for “catastrophic events”. The thing is, that because of my chosen life path, I have no concern about needing that health plan for viruses or acute or chronic conditions. My body is strong and when health challenges arise (which is rarely), I quickly move through these challenges as I have learned to surrender to the experience, use the wisdom I have learned in my holistic training, or seek out qualified eastern or western medicine practitioners if needed.
Getting to this place didn’t happen easily or quickly.
Growing up, I was plagued by recurrent severe sinus infections, skin rashes, low energy, poor digestion which carried over into my young adult life and occasionally sent me to the emergency room. My default state was one of amped up and over-stressed, always trying to get to the next thing. Enjoy the moment? What a luxury! That would have to wait for “later”.
The first of many wake up calls was becoming a mom.
About sixteen years ago, I started exploring ways to help a family member who had neurological issues that pharmaceutical solutions were only making worse. In supporting that family member, I learned much about the effectiveness of integrated healthcare, holistic, nutritional, and all-natural practices. My family and I benefited enormously in many areas of health and well-being.
Later, my mother came to live with my family under Hospice care in February 2010. Diagnosed with glioblastoma (aggressive cancerous brain cancer) in June of 2009, medical professionals reported that her tumor was larger than a walnut! After five months of western treatments of Avastin and chemotherapy she was no longer able to sustain the protocol. She was very weak and given only two to four weeks to live. With my family’s support and nothing to lose, I began facilitating some alternative therapies for our mom, most of which were nutritional and homeopathic. My mother’s vitality started to return very quickly. Instead of deteriorating as the doctors predicted, she improved every week.
Three months after only being given a few weeks to live, my mom was able to attend and participate in her college reunion. In July 2010, she enjoyed a week at the beach with family. In late August 2010, a scan of my mother’s brain revealed that there was no longer a tumor in her brain. Thankfully, my mom lived over three years past diagnosis of a Glioblastoma brain tumor, a disease that claims the lives of most within a year (even with conventional treatment). What a lesson in finding the joy and gratitude in every day!
After this experience, there was an undeniable pull internal pull for me to learn more about how to support the body to fight disease and increase vitality and healing. After exploring many modalities, I decided to study Medical Qi Gong since it was one of the oldest known forms of good-health cultivation and the foundation for so many other methods.
Already, I was practicing Pangu Shengong daily and knew how this practice had changed my life and relationships – first and foremost resolving high blood pressure in a couple of weeks after spending a year following western and other eastern approaches to no avail. Studying the healing methods was the next step. I continue to study with Qi Gong Master Ou, Wen Wei, the creator of Pangu Shengong. You can read more about this journey on my Pangu Moving Form Instructor Page.
It was clear early in my training that healing and coaching is my true calling. When I started part-time offering Qi Gong healing and instruction, it became inevitable that this work was meant to be my full-time profession. It brings me so much joy to work with people in this way.
I began studying Reiki in the fall of 2011 and finished my Medical Qi Gong Certification Series in September 2013. In both practices, the practitioner acts as a trained conduit for healing energy that has always been present and available to us. I practice Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Meditation daily to keep myself balanced and well. I am also a regular yoga practitioner. I am a Certified Holistic Health Coach (2016) and coach clients in identifying wellness goals by offering the right approach, support, and accountability to reach those goals.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wellesley College with a BA degree in Psychology and Education. I also hold a Master of School Administration (MSA) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to being certified in Medical Qi Gong and Reiki, I was the School Director for BrightPath Education. I was previously an educator and public school administrator for Wake County Public Schools. Selected as an N.C. Principal Fellow in 1996, I worked as an assistant principal until 2000.
I live in Raleigh, North Carolina with my launching son and daughter and beagle mix, Jeter. I continue to study and learn daily, enjoy being outside doing just about anything, and hanging out with friends and family.
