Part 4: Roots Of Anxiety And Overwhelm

Part 4:
[Last week I shared 1-3 about anxiety’s roots.]

-the anxiety that comes from what it is going on in the community, world, collective culture

Wowza. 2020-2022 were an interesting collection of years! One of those eras that changes (or at least impacted) EVERYTHING it seemed. For nearly everyone. On the entire planet.

COVID, fires, floods, earthquakes, murder hornets, hurricanes, job loss, unjust actions, school and learning structures, public outcry, public response, political mayhem, economic uncertainty.

And it’s not done.  You know, as they say, there’s always something.

However, you don’t always have to interact with it in the same way – you are powerful like that.  You can change your PERSPECTIVE.

So, some of you really FEEL the suffering. You are aware of your own AND the suffering of many many others.

It feels like, sometimes, the ONLY thing you can do to “help” is WORRY and be overwhelmed. Sympathy is good, right? And so, you are doing your part.

Perhaps you’ve experienced this…

The worry, though, goes beyond the inconvenience and canceled events.

Generalized anger at the world, waking up daily “on the wrong side of the bed” for weeks or months, overwhelmed with helplessness, worry about the state of the world that lasts more than an hour, self-medicating to escape, a general feeling of pessimism, worry, worry, worry.

And the challenges that are present in your life? With all the added collective stress and all the unknowns, it’s not being handled 100% the way you prefer. And maybe it’s been a long time since you “rolled with it.”

Sometimes you wonder if you remember what resilience is at all.

There is an antidote.
-Improve the quantity and quality of your foundational energy – daily.
-Decide to shift your perspective from one of disempowerment to empowerment.

In a nutshell, express your emotions about what is happening that is outside your control and let it go. It’s a source of personal empowerment to remember that we can LET IT GO:
Send it love.
Send out the sincere wish that EVERYONE be free of suffering and know the root of harmony and happiness.
Remember that you cannot control world events and it isn’t your job personally to fix them (another post soon on activism with presence).

Do you know the teaching of ho’oponopono? If you do, strive to heal *your resistance to fully practice it*.

What are you letting go of NOW from this point on?

Choose to decide to do it.

AND to truly let go so that our bodies (health), minds (patterns), and souls are FREE from anxiety, requires that we first cultivate acceptance about what it is (and has been). Second, we must also replenish ourselves with foundational energy.  The things that have happened in our lives, especially traumatic events or emotionally painful relationships, drain us.  In our society, we have not grown up with effective ways to remedy that draining.

When you have a proven method for not only improving your foundational energy AND the support of someone who can assist you with clearing out the energy that got lodged as a result of traumatic events or painful relationships, there is a palpable and decisive shift.  When you have that shift, having a guide empowering you in this new territory is KEY.

Part 3: The Roots of Anxiety and Overwhelm

Part 3:

[Some time ago, I shared Part 1 and Part 2 about anxiety’s roots – but the other Parts didn’t get published. Here is Part 3 and the rest to follow.]

We worry about those we love.

About 11 years ago, my mom came to live with my family under hospice care.  She had a glioblastoma brain tumor and she was no longer able to receive treatment for it because her body couldn’t take any more.

When my sister and I lobbied to bring her to Raleigh to be close to her community for the last 28 years or so (they had recently moved 5 hours away), I incorrectly presumed her situation was so dire, that she would be going to the Hospice facility nearby.

I learned that she would instead be coming to my house and I would be her main caretaker.  At the time, I had two young elementary kids, I ran a business I owned with my husband, and also managed his law firm’s administrative tasks. I had only recently moved back to Raleigh after 6 years away. I never had managed stress well prior to all of this.

Out of SOMEWHERE I mustered the strength and resolve to be there for my mom, to stay as present as possible with my kids, and to somehow keep our businesses going.  My sister, other family members, friends, as well as church and friends helped – immensely.

With our care (a whole other LONG and AMAZING story), my mom didn’t die in 2-4 weeks like they said she would.  She got *better and better* and eventually didn’t have a brain tumor on the CT Scans for a while.  She lived another 2.5 years.

AND I didn’t have a breakdown during that intense time.

Later though….it all caught up

Excruciating chronic pain, digestive issues, massive fatigue, sleeplessness, rashes, impatience, wacked-out hormonal issues (38 years old), and eventually dangerously high blood pressure.

Maybe you can relate to this chain of events:

Giant heavy, painful life event or injury that was outside of your control, you muster through it, all seems well, then wham-o, your body is breaking down from all directions, you cannot seem to recover or get traction on improving.

-You get injured again.  You start having a series of hard-to-pinpoint-the-cause symptoms. Your relationships seem strained – or explosive.

Your body and spirit are depleted; the anxiety ratchets up.

Maybe wonder when the next family member is going to have a crisis. Your adult child is suffering from depression.  Your teenager’s anxiety has him turning to smoking or pot to relax and you wonder what he will turn to next. Your spouse or partner’s emotional state is agitated in the political climate or by concerns for the economy.

And it all weighs heavily on you.

I get it. We worry about those we love. We feel them. 

Through the journey with my mom, I not only was physically drained, but I was also emotionally drained by my own grief and the regret my mom carried.

And I had been taking that on as my job to fix – my duty to commiserate. (I also thought I needed to save my kids from hardship, come up with solutions to my husband’s disenchanted state, etc…)

And then, in the midst of it, I learned something that gave me the springboard to CHANGE EVERYTHING.

Other people’s paths and life journeys are outside of our control.  

Of course, you “know” that.  I “knew” it too.  I wasn’t some control freak, right?
Right? Or was I?

Some of you may want to argue with me that we have control over our children’s suffering and it’s our JOB to take on their suffering.  Maybe you even believe that you’re a better parent because you suffer with your children.

To truly let go so that our bodies (health), minds (patterns), and souls are FREE from anxiety, requires that we first cultivate acceptance about what it is (and has been). Second, we must also replenish ourselves with foundational energy.  The things that have happened in our lives, especially traumatic events or emotionally painful relationships, drain us.  In our society, we have not grown up with effective ways to remedy that draining or depletion.

However, when you have a proven method for not only improving your foundational energy AND the support of someone who can assist you with clearing out the energy that got lodged as a result of traumatic events or painful relationships, there is a palpable and decisive shift.  When you have that shift, having a guide empowering you in this new territory is KEY.

Part 2: The Roots of Anxiety and Overwhelm

A main source of anxiety is being preoccupied or focused on matters that are outside of your control.

Part 2:
This includes:
-regretting or resenting YOUR decisions/behaviors that were made in the past that you perceive are affecting your now.

[The other day, I shared (Part 1) about the anxiety that was connected to resenting the behavior of OTHERS.]

We can spend a lot of personal energy and attention and THINKING on our own past behavior, patterns, etc. And since we cannot undo the past, it is all outside of our control NOW.

Does this sound familiar?
-“This is just what always happens to me.”
-“I just always [insert negative behavior you do and haven’t been able to stop].”
-You are hard on yourself or punishing yourself either inwardly or out loud in the presence of others.
-You question whether you deserve to be free of suffering and have joy in your life.
-“The universe is just against me.”
-“Here we go again…”
-“See? I just can’t catch a break.”

Replaying the past decisions that you regret affects your anxiety NOW because you have a belief system that has you looking for evidence that things are destined to go the WRONG way for you.

No one’s life is DESTINED to go the WRONG way.

(And yes, the struggles are real. We are meant to EVOLVE. We do this through challenges.)

And the things that happened in the past, you have no control over NOW.

So what are you getting out of holding onto the actions and thoughts and patterns of the past that you REGRET?

Some of you may have an answer for that…besides “Nothing”.

Some of you may know RATIONALLY, “Nothing. I am getting nothing out of holding that regret and resentment for things I have done and thought in the past.”

Ah, but yet we still do it.

What are you letting go of NOW from this point on?

I encourage you to chose and decide to do it.

AND to truly let go so that our bodies (health), minds (patterns), and souls are FREE from anxiety, requires that we first cultivate acceptance about what it is (and has been). Anxiety’s stronghold in our anger and rage against others.

A main source of anxiety is being preoccupied or focused on matters that are outside of your control.

For example:
-regretting or resenting the decisions or behaviors of others that were made in the past that you perceive are affecting your now.

Most of us can relate to having our anger triggered by another person.

Most people do not realize, however, that our anger is usually really just our anxiety being expressed in a different way.

In fact, many women (and men) I speak to point to their interactions or decisions of other people as the source of their unhappiness or lack of peace in their lives.

Can you relate to this too?

-Is there an interaction with another person that you have rolling around in your head like a broken record or a constantly replaying “tape”.
-Are you in an emotionally abusive relationship?
-Do you find yourself judging the decisions and behavior and feeling a sense of indignation about it?

If you wish to lessen the anxiety (or anger) you feel in life, first, you have to be very honest about your perspective about the things that have happened or are happening outside of your control (which is everything except for your actions and thoughts right NOW).

Shining the light of awareness on the true source of suffering isn’t easy. It means we have to give up blaming other people for our thoughts and feelings.

It is a rational goal, is it not?
Sure. It makes sense.

And wowee! Not so easy to do.

Truly, though giving up blaming our anxiety (and the ensuing suffering) on outside circumstances is FREEING.

Truly, I have many clients who come to me saying that they know they “should” let stuff go, and they have often usually done a “ton of work” around letting something go.

Yet, they remain angry about what another person has done or chosen.

Truly, I get it.

AND to truly let go so that our bodies (health), minds (patterns), and souls are FREE from anxiety, requires that we first cultivate acceptance about what it is (and has been). Second, we must also replenish ourselves with foundational energy.  The things that have happened in our lives, especially traumatic events or emotionally painful relationships, drain us.  In our society, we have not grown up with effective ways to remedy that draining.

Wanted to touch base with you about Ql Gong and my feelings.  First, each time I [practice Qi Gong] my hands get very warm and a little tingly.  Second, I have been falling asleep much quicker than before and I haven’t been waking up during the night, getting 6 to 7 hrs of uninterrupted sleep.
