Do You Need a “Low Information” Diet

No matter what your point of view, there is no denying that there is much turmoil and unease in the world today.

Thanks to the instant news of the internet age and social media, it is quite easy to have your time, your mood, your productivity, etc. hijacked for the day…er…for the week…uh, for the month.

Bring some mindful boundaries to the mix.

A “Low Information Diet” may be helpful. Be mindful of how much input you are getting and how it is affecting you. Diet means to alter your intake, not to completely stop consuming. I am not suggesting apathy or complete withdrawl from the world (although doing that every so often can be quite detoxifying).

Here are some Low Information Diet suggestions to support calm presence in the midst of it all.

  • Decide what time of day you will get your news. Limit it to 30-45 minutes.
  • Take a complete break from screens/input for 1-2 waking hours during the day. Perhaps this is while preparing/eating/cleaning up meals, exercising, meditation (certainly), or while connecting with people who FEED you.
  • Choose a day to completely stay off the internet, news, social media for 12+ hours.
  • Take Facebook off your phone. If you do use Facebook, be deliberate about it. Engage with a calm, open-hearted and kind mindset. Set a timer and sign out when the timer ends.
  • If current events are affecting your mood: Acknowledge that emotion and rest assured that you are not the only one who has had that emotion. Can you to find a happy medium between self-righteousness and completely burying those feelings?
  • If you are called to respond to information, see where you can move towards being calm and grounded.  Relax into this present moment. See what clarity arises before choosing an ACTION or MINDSET.
  • Consider choosing benevolence and open-heartedness towards those things that come into your experience – even if you don’t like what is happening or you completely are at odds with it.  This is one way we make big changes both inside ourselves and in the world. And thoughtful, meaningful action matters.
